Proximity Cards

Proximity cards, also called prox cards or keycards, are contactless RFID credentials that work with proximity card readers. Sealed inside each prox card is an antenna, capacitor and a radio frequency identification (RFID) chip that stores an internal ID number. When a prox card is placed within close proximity (1-3 inches) of a prox reader, it sends out a 125kHz low-frequency signal that the reader can pick up and interpret as an internal card number. The prox reader then performs a programmed function, such as unlocking a door or clocking an employee In or Out of work, based on the validity of the internal card number.

Because prox cards don’t have any moving parts and they can be scanned hands-free, they require less maintenance than traditional access control systems. They also offer a more secure option because the card’s chip sends out a signal that’s unique to each card, and the reader then tries to match the card’s internal ID number with a RFID Card Supplier list of authorized numbers in a database. If the ID number matches one in the database, the system gives access.
