MIFARE DESFire EV2 – Fast, Reliable and Flexible

NXP announced DESFire EV2 back in 2013, but it took some time for institutions to upgrade their card portfolios. Those that did, are now enjoying the advantages of this fast, reliable and flexible contactless technology.

DESFire EV2 delivers an excellent balance of speed, performance and cost efficiency. It also allows for seamless integration of new ticketing media such as smart paper tickets, banking convergence cards and mobile ticketing based on NFC.

Security

The second evolution of our MIFARE DESFire contactless ICs offers enhanced security, privacy and multi-application support to enable new business models. It meets desfire ev2 global standards for air interface and cryptographic methods as well as anticipates future requirements for data protection, such as a random UID that ensures uniqueness.

A DESFire chip is secure against spoofing, relay attacks and tampering with the help of a security architecture that includes an integrated circuit that prevents unauthorized writing to the card. Additionally, a memory protection function and proximity check protect against illegal snooping of the data on the chip.

As a result, the MIFARE DESFire EV2 enables a higher level of transaction and personal data protection in addition to a range of new applications, such as physical access control, public transport ticketing or loyalty schemes. It also supports the MIFARE 2GO cloud service, allowing for digital credentials to be migrated from a PVC or Composite PET/PVC card to a mobile app and used to access logical access systems as well as Smart City services in a seamless manner.

This IC is limited in the number of applications and files it can host because of its smaller memory plot, but it perfectly addresses needs for account based systems with a maximum read/write distance of 10 cm. It can be used for corporate access cards, as a public transport ticket or for loyalty schemes as well as closed-loop payments in the automotive industry.

Performance

The MIFARE DESFire EV2 is the consumer friendly solution for system design with heightened security and reliability. The chip supports up to 28 different applications and has an on-chip backup management system, mutual three-pass authentication and encrypted communication. Data transfer rates of up to 848 Kbit/s allow for fast and efficient data processing. It also features an automatic anti-tear mechanism, guarantees transaction-oriented data integrity and provides a security profile that uses random UID for each tap, making the card nearly impossible to clone.

Its innovative MIsmartApp feature enables system providers to offer or sell application space on their cards. This enables new business models and gives end users the ability to use their card for many applications such as closed-loop payment at vending machines, access control management and loyalty programmes.

All OmniAssure credentials are based on the latest ISO14443 DESFire EV2 standards and meet the highest levels of security. They are EAL5+ certified and utilize the latest cryptography standards including key diversification. The ICs are pre-programmed, enabling Honeywell to offer a fully managed service that includes the management of site codes, card ranges and security keys.

With the increasing number of data breaches at universities and older magnetic stripe and proximity cards being deemed unsecure, the need for a more secure replacement has never been more apparent. MIFARE DESFire offers universities the option to migrate their cards to a more secure solution without a significant increase in cost and with an added benefit of multi-application support. MIFARE DESFire is also compatible with NXP’s 2GO cloud service which allows for the management of digitized MIFARE product-based credentials on NFC-enabled devices such as smart phones or wearables.

Interoperability

NXP’s DESFire EV2 contactless smart card IC enables the design of high-performance, secure and interoperable contactless systems. The chip offers a 4Kbyte non-volatile memory and a high-speed triple-DES data encryption co-processor for fast and highly secure transmission of application data. Combined with an automatic anti-tear mechanism, DESFire EV2 ensures data integrity during contactless transactions. The IC is Common Criteria EAL 5+ security certified – the same level of certification as demand for smart card IC products used in banking cards and electronic passports.

MIFARE DESFire EV2 supports a wide variety of applications including ticketing for public transport and other transit systems, closed-loop payment and access control solutions as well as campus identification. NXP’s DESFire solutions also deliver the reliability needed for turnstile environments enabling a seamless ticketing and payment experience for passengers.

All MIFARE DESFire EV2 ICs are based desfire ev2 on open global standards for both air interface and implemented cryptographic methods. They support all levels of ISO/IEC 14443A, use optional ISO/IEC 7816-4 commands and implement the hardware-based DES/2K3DES/AES encryption algorithms. They also feature an on-chip backup management system and mutual three pass authentication. Moreover, an individual file is capable of storing up to 32 different applications with various configurations.

MIFARE DESFire EV3 and EV3C offer a number of new features, such as the possibility to configure ATS information for card personalization, the ability to perform over-the-air updates on already issued cards and a transaction timer to help mitigate man-in-the-middle attacks. These and other new features of the MIFARE DESFire EV3 family, are designed to enable a new generation of Smart City services that can be easily deployed across multiple form factors while protecting user privacy.

Flexibility

The DESFire EV2 chip is built to be flexible, allowing the system integrator to create a contactless smart card solution with a wide range of applications in mind. It has been designed with a new generation of break through features to enhance the customer experience, whilst providing next level transaction security and privacy.

The MIFARE DESFire family consists of contactless ICs that implement open global standards for both air interface and implemented cryptographic methods. It is a secure, scalable, multiapplication platform suitable for service providers offering interoperable and dependable contactless proximity transactions.

It is Common Criteria EAL5+ security certified which is the same certification level as demanded in products used in banking cards and electronic passports. Featuring five AES 128-bit keys to monitor access rights and messaging options that boost the data protection, it is also equipped with a transaction timer to help mitigate man-in-the-middle attacks.

These 8K PVC ISO-Sized Cards have been quality checked throughout the manufacturing process; from materials, specifications, collation, lamination, cutting and a final QC including a 100% chip test. They are compatible with all standard card printers and can be printed in any full colour design.
