Contrast Ratio
The iPhone 13 Pro Max has a very high Display Contrast Ratio that is among the highest we have measured on a Smartphone. This is largely due to the HEIC Photo File Format (which allows images to be rendered with a much higher peak brightness than traditional JPEG files) which results in a more neutral picture with less contrast loss.
The 13 Pro Max does a very good job rendering the very bright tones in photos and does an excellent job of HDR video with no frame drops or judder, better than the 12 Pro Max. It also has a very wide Color Gamut, is able to accurately reproduce a large number of colors and is one of the best Smartphone displays for reproducing dark tones in photographs.
While most Smartphones have a significant Color Shift with Viewing Angle, the iPhone 13 Pro Max has only a small and acceptable shift at 30 degrees, as shown in our graph below. This is far smaller than the average LCD and is a major advantage of OLED displays.
Black Levels
The iPhone 13 Pro Max delivers excellent black levels. In fact, it is one of the best we’ve iphone 13 pro max lcd seen on any smartphone display, and it is certainly better than the displays on competing Android smartphones.
When the Phone 13 Pro Max is set to Auto-Brightness, it reaches a Peak White Screen Brightness of about 1000 nits, which is very bright. This is much higher than any other display in our lab, and it is a key factor that contributes to the Phone 13 Pro Max’s excellent Battery Running Time results.
It also shows no frame drops or judder when playing 24 and 30 Fps videos, which is good to see as well. And when watching HDR10 videos, the Phone 13 Pro Max delivers iphone 13 pro max lcd faithful video colors with no unnatural looking yellow tint.
The Phone 13 Pro Max has a smaller Slot cutout area (a “notch”) than last year’s model, and it takes up only 1.3% of the screen. This helps improve the Display Power Efficiency of the Phone, which in turn provides a longer Running Time on the Battery for the same Peak White Screen Brightness.
Screen Brightness
In bright Ambient Light the iPhone 13 Pro Max delivers a high Screen Brightness for a Smartphone and a good Image Contrast, ensuring that the display is easily readable and the picture looks sharp. The display also has very low Screen Reflectance to minimize light reflection from the display surface.
The display also has a very fast 120 Hz Display Refresh Rate that refreshes the display sub-pixels very quickly to reduce Visual Motion Blur for clear and crisp images. The iPhone 13 Pro Max has a DisplayMate Dynamic Contrast Rating for High Ambient Light of up to 231, among the highest that we have ever measured on a Smartphone and a good indicator of how well the display can be seen in bright ambient light conditions.
The display has Apple’s True Tone viewing mode that automatically adapts the White Point and color balance to match the ambient lighting conditions. This makes content look more natural in all lighting conditions and reduces the eye strain caused by a blueish hue appearing on the display when viewed under bright ambient light conditions.
Refresh Rate
The iPhone 13 Pro Max has a 120Hz display refresh rate, which results in smoother scrolling and animations. This is an improvement over the 60Hz refresh rate on most phones.
It also supports High Dynamic Range (HDR), which provides a wider color gamut and higher peak brightness than standard displays. This allows it to show the full range of colors in video content and photos, and gives images a more realistic and vibrant appearance.
In addition, the iPhone 13 Pro Max has a lower blue light level than other smartphones to reduce eye strain. This makes it easier to use in low-light conditions, such as reading or watching videos.
