How to Tighten Skin With an RF Radio Frequency Machine
RF treatments are able to tighten skin, minimise textural issues (like scars and stretch marks), and even’melt’ fat. But choosing the right machine, and a skilled practitioner, is key to the result you’re after.
There are many RF machines on the market, including Brazilian equipments. However, there aren’t enough studies with good levels of evidence to prove the benefits claimed by manufacturers.
What is RF?
We’re exposed to RF radiation from cell phones, radio broadcasts and Wi-Fi every day, but there’s no evidence it has a negative impact on health. RF can be used to transfer information, sense objects and even heat them. It’s the technology behind airport body scanners, microwave ovens and industrial heating processes.
RF has both electric and magnetic field components. The strength of an RF electromagnetic field is measured in units called volts per meter (V/m) for the electric component and amperes per metre (A/m) for the magnetic component. RF electromagnetic fields are often described as having a “power density,” which is the power of an RF electromagnetic field divided by its area.
To convey information, RF can be modulated. The simplest form of modulation is on-off, using a short time for a dot and a long time for a dash (similar to Morse Code). More sophisticated forms of modulation use either the amplitude or frequency of the radiated RF.
RF is an important part of modern life. It is used in a wide variety of applications from wireless communication and broadcasting to medical and beauty treatments. It is also widely used in physics research, such as in MRI scanners and particle accelerators. In the RF Radio Frequency Machine US, radio frequencies are regulated by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The agency sets the range of RF frequencies and assigns licenses to businesses such as wireless networks and broadcasting stations.
Biopolar
The heat from RF tightens your skin’s deeper layers, but also stimulates new collagen to give you firmer and more youthful-looking skin. It does this without damaging the surface layer or causing the type of discoloration that you might see with lasers.
Depending on the brand of RF machine used and your therapist’s skill and experience, you can expect a gentle treatment that feels like a brief hot sensation with occasional cooling. The therapist will apply a conductivity gel to your skin before using the RF handpiece. This could either be a stick-like ‘gun-shaped’ device that is rolled over the skin after the gel has been applied (Pelleve) or it may be a larger hand piece that delivers a grid-like pattern (Thermage).
While some brands and therapists stress the fact that fat loss can occur with RF treatments, this only happens when intense enough RF energy reaches the subcutaneous fat cells. It’s a risk you take with many different types of non-invasive body sculpting devices, and even the best ones can cause unwanted fat loss if the therapist doesn’t control the intensity of the energy used.
There is some evidence that the monopolar (sometimes RF Radio Frequency Machine called unipolar) RF delivers more focused and concentrated heat, as opposed to the diffused heating of bipolar RF. That’s because the current flows straight through a stick-on conductivity pad that is placed on your skin, rather than conducting in and out of the hand piece like a loop around the skin.
Multipolar
Multipolar RF machines have multiple electrodes that can be manipulated to active and inactive, offering greater operator control over the treatment. This allows the technician to target specific areas of the skin for maximum results with minimum discomfort. These devices also offer a deeper penetration of heat to the epidermis (skin surface), middle layer of the dermis and even the subcutaneous fat tissue.
This multipolar radiofrequency treatment stimulates collagen production and increases protein fiber synthesis to tighten the skin. It can also reduce cellulite appearance, slim the thighs and buttocks and firm the stomach. We use a machine from Korea called Magic Polar which combines RF with Pulsed Electro Magnetic Fields (PEMF). The patented MP-RF technology synergistically boosts the body’s natural process by heating and directly stimulating fibroblasts to increase the production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid, as well as improving the metabolism of fat cells.
Despite the unqualified belief that 21st century globalisation will diminish the relevance of material capabilities, economic and military, traditional forms of competition for hegemonic influence – arms build-ups and searches for territorial advantage – will continue to shape rivalries at the local and regional level. Moreover, new technological platforms such as cyber and artificial intelligence will intensify these rivalries. The need to define national development priorities is therefore more relevant than ever before.
Tri-polar
This device uses tri-polar RF for skin tightening, which improves fine lines, wrinkles and sagging. It stimulates the production of collagen and elastin for a more youthful appearance. It also reduces redness and brown spots caused by sun exposure. It is safe for all skin types and colours, and does not cause permanent pigment changes.
There are a number of different machines available for RF treatment, with some using monopolar RF alone, and others using multi-polar or even tripolar technology. Some are designed for the face and some can be used on the body (using a ‘body’ headpiece).
Unlike lasers, RF is independent of chromophores, meaning it works on all skin types. It’s also much safer to use than other technologies such as lasers, which can lead to pigment changes in some patients.
During a professional facial, your therapist will apply a gel to the skin and then move the handpiece over the area of concern. During bipolar RF treatments, the energy alternates between two electrodes in the same handpiece (in sets of two). The negative grounding pad attached to your lower back completes an electrical circuit and allows the current to travel down through all layers of skin, reaches 2-4mm beneath the surface, and heats up the subcutaneous fat layer as well. This type of RF is best for those with lighter skin tones who want to lose unwanted fat deposits but don’t want to risk permanent pigmentation.
